Vintage Maling Chintz Chestnut Brown Cake Plate Newcastle on Tyne England 6527

Description:

Vintage Maling Chintz Cake Plate — Pattern 6527, c.1948–1950
Maling Pottery, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England

A handsome Maling chintz cake plate in the square wavy-edged form with lug handles, decorated in the all-over chintz pattern — a chestnut-brown printed ground hand-over-painted in rich colours, with pink roses, blue bellflowers, yellow and cream blossoms winding across brown branching stems. Gilt edging throughout.

Maling was the North East of England's great pottery and, at its height, the largest producer of decorative earthenware in the country. It closed in 1963, and its chintz and floral wares have a devoted following among collectors.
