About the author, NIKOLAI BERDYAEV (from Wikipedia):

******Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev, b.1874 d.1948, was a Russian philosopher, theologian, and Christian existentialist who emphasized the existential spiritual significance of human freedom and the human person.

Berdyaev became a Professor at the Moscow University in 1922. In the same year he was accused of conspiracy against the government, and was arrested and jailed. Felix Dzerzhinsky, the feared head of the Cheka, personally interrogated him. Berdyaev reportedly gave his interrogator a stern lecture on the problems with Bolshevism. Novelist Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in his book The Gulag Archipelago recounts the incident as follows:

Berdyaev was arrested twice; he was taken in 1922 for a midnight interrogation with Dzerjinsky; Kamenev was also there.... But Berdyaev did not humiliate himself, he did not beg, he firmly professed the moral and religious principles by virtue of which he did not adhere to the party in power; and not only did they judge that there was no point in putting him on trial, but he was freed. Now there is a man who had a "point of view"!

In 1923 Berdyaev and his wife moved to Paris where he taught, lectured and wrote.******

About the YMCA PRESS (from Wikipedia and elsewhere):

******The YMCA Press publishing house was founded in 1921 in Prague by Russian émigrés with support from the American Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). It was established to publish and disseminate theological, philosophical, and literary works that were prohibited following the Bolshevik Revolution. After its inception in Prague, the publishing house relocated to Berlin in 1923 and subsequently established its long-term headquarters in Paris in 1925. Over the decades, it became a crucial outlet for exiled Russian intellectuals and famously published banned works, including Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago.******
