Original oil painting on wooden panel, depicting an expressive profile portrait study of a seated figure seen largely from the back.
Although the artist remains unidentified, the work displays the confident handling and strong color relationships of a professionally trained painter. The composition is strikingly modern, reducing the figure to bold masses of crimson, green and warm earth tones while concentrating the light on the head and neck.
Rather than a formal commissioned portrait, the painting appears to be a spontaneous studio study or bozzetto, executed with direct, assured brushwork and a remarkable sense of color and balance.
The panel is housed in its attractive original Art Nouveau / Liberty period frame, which complements the work beautifully and is included with the sale.
A handwritten inscription on the reverse attributes the painting to the Italian artist Ulisse Caputo, matching the initials at the down left. However, after further research I have not been able to verify this attribution with confidence, and the painting is therefore offered as the work of an unidentified Italian artist.
