A striking pair of vintage pendant ceiling lights dating from approximately the 1960s or 1970s.

These unusual lights have a bold Mid-Century Modern Space Age design, with bulbous shades finished in a distinctive graduated olive-green and black glaze. Circular openings around each shade allow light to escape from the sides, creating an attractive decorative effect when illuminated.

The shades appear to be ceramic and have the textured, richly glazed appearance commonly associated with West German “Fat Lava” lighting and ceramics of the period. Similar designs were also produced in Yugoslavia and elsewhere in continental Europe; no maker’s mark has been identified, so the precise manufacturer and country of origin are unknown.

Each pendant has brass-tone detailing, a black upper fitting and an adjustable coiled suspension cable. They would look particularly effective positioned together above a dining table, kitchen island or breakfast bar.

The lamp holders take standard bayonet-fitting bulbs.

The lamp holders and adjustable mechanisms are working. The lights will need to be wired into a suitable ceiling electrical supply before use. For safety, installation and testing should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

The shades display some surface marks, scratches and wear consistent with their age. There is also age-related wear and spotting to the pale interiors. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

Wear and tear are commensurate with age.
