A striking signed AMP pendant from the 1970s, created in the bold Modernist and Brutalist style that defined much of the era’s sculptural costume jewellery.
The textured gold-tone pendant has an organic, hammered surface with an abstract openwork feature resembling a city skyline or group of rising skyscrapers. A vivid oval blue glass cabochon adds a focal point.
The reverse is signed © AMP and carries the design number 600. Collectors have attributed the AMP mark to Artistic Miniature Products, an American manufacturer associated with sculptural costume jewellery. Published information about the company remains limited, so this attribution should be regarded as collector-based rather than fully documented.
The pendant measures approximately 3.5 x 3 cm, or 1.4 x 1.2 inches. It hangs from a 44 cm, or approximately 17.3-inch, gold-tone chain. The chain is a later replacement dating from around the 1980s and is not the pendant’s original chain.
The front presents very well. Marks that appear across the front in some photographs are reflections and shadows created by the lighting box rather than damage. The reverse has age-related loss to the gold-tone plating, exposing portions of the underlying base metal. This appears more pronounced in the enlarged photographs than it does when the pendant is handled normally.
A distinctive piece with wonderful texture, colour and unmistakable 1970s architectural character.
