First Period Worcester “Man In A Pavilion” Tea Bowl & Saucer, Blue Crescent Marks, c.1760–1770

A fine antique First Period Worcester porcelain tea bowl and saucer, dating to the Dr Wall period, circa 1760–1770. The set is decorated in underglaze blue with the desirable Man In A Pavilion pattern, an early Worcester chinoiserie landscape design featuring a figure within a pavilion, stylised trees, rocks, birds, architectural details and waterside landscape elements.

Both pieces carry blue open crescent marks, consistent with Worcester underglaze-blue wares of the mid 18th century. The soft-paste porcelain body, warm glaze tone, low footrim, scale, form and decoration all support attribution to the Worcester Porcelain Factory during the First Period.

The tea bowl is decorated externally with the chinoiserie landscape and internally with a small central island/rock motif. The saucer carries the principal landscape scene, attractively arranged within the well of the dish. This is a scarce and collectable Georgian blue-and-white porcelain set, particularly appealing to collectors of early English porcelain and First Period Worcester teawares.

Condition

Good antique condition overall, with wear consistent with age and use. The tea bowl has a short fine rim hairline/stress line, visible externally with corresponding internal stress/crazing at the same area. There is also a tiny rim nick/frit and light age-related glaze wear. The saucer has typical kiln speckling, minor surface wear and age-related marks. Both pieces show small firing specks and glaze irregularities consistent with 18th-century soft-paste porcelain. No restoration is visible from inspection.
