This 1oz gold coin is a celebration of the work of Lewis Carroll and his most famous creation: Alice. Through The Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There - the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - was first published in 1871. This time, Alice enters Wonderland through a mirror (rather than falling down a rabbit hole) and enters at topsy turvey world, populated by old friends and new nursery rhyme characters. Like the other Royal Mint coin in this collection, featuring the Cheshire Cat, this piece takes inspiration from the original illustrations to the work by Sir John Tenniel. Created in collaboration with the V&A Museum, the reverse of this coin was adapted by Ffion Gwillim.It features twin brothers, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who Alice encounters in the fourth chapter of Through the Looking Glass. They’re instantly recognisable to readers young and old. Alice herself is seen from the side, above the words ‘THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS’. This design is paired with Jody Clark’s portrait Her Majesty the Queen, the fifth definitive effigy used on her UK coinage. This coin is composed of 31.21 grams of 999.9 or 24 carat fine gold, finished to proof standard. The diameter of this piece is 32.69 millimetres and the face value is £100 / One Hundred Pounds. This Alice in Wonderland coin comes from a limited edition presentation of just 150 pieces. It’s offered in its original presentation case and capsule from The Royal Mint with an information booklet and a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
