Item up for sale is an incredible metal trinket / dresser / cigarette box made in Japan featuring a repousse scene of a figure riding a deer on the lid. Box is marked on the underside of the base with " Japan " with a maker's mark of a sailboat with a Y in the sail which is the mark of the Yamatogumi Company which used this mark during the Japanese Occupation period after WW2. The scene depicted on the lid is possibly a nod to the Shinto legend that tells of Takemikazuchi ( the Thunder God ) who was said to have rode the back of a white deer into the ancient capital of Nara. Some research suggests that boxes like this were initially designed as cigarette boxes. Interior of the box measures 3" by 3-1/2".

Metal is non magnetic when tested. Main body of the box has a bronze tone finish ( NOT bronze) on the exterior with the interior showing a gold / brass tone finish. Interior of the lid shows a spot of surface rust. The repousse scene on the top of the lid has a brass tone finish which exhibits finish wear and patina. Entire piece exhibits soiling, tarnish and patina and would benefit from a detail cleaning and polish. Item shows some metal wear around all edges and corners consistent with age and use. Underside of the base shows a small post of oxidation with surface of the base showing a scratch or mold line.

Box ( with lid on ) measures 1-3/4" top to bottom by 4-1/8" wide across the base by 3-1/2" front to back across the base. Amazing vintage box that comes fresh to the market from a recent estate buyout. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
