Struck during the first year of the Free City of Danzig’s independent currency system, the 1923 1 Gulden is a classic of European Art Deco numismatics. Following the Treaty of Versailles, Danzig was separated from Germany to become a semi-autonomous city-state under League of Nations protection. To stabilize its economy during the hyperinflation of the early 1920s, the city introduced the Gulden, pegged to the British Pound. At PCGS MS 62, this coin is a choice uncirculated example.
