Description:

This engraving offers several illustrations notably (i) in the top left corner the ground plan of the town of Ceasarea, built by Herod the Great, and (ii) Mount Tabor, in the top right corner, scene of the Transfiguration of Jesus.

This engraving was taken from a German version of 'A description of the East and some other Countries' by Richard Pococke. Richard Pococke set out from England in 1737 and over the next several years he toured upper and lower Egypt, ascended Vesuvius twice, explored the Alps in the region of Chamonix, visited the Holy Land, traveled around Crete (where he climbed Mt Ida and rescued a German enslaved by the Turks) and finally returned home in 1740.

Condition: Very good. The engraving has been cleaned and pressed and is ready for framing. Left margin repaired.
