Description

There is something wonderfully touching about this little girl’s expression. Resting her head against her hand while carefully holding her beloved doll, she seems to have paused just long enough for the photographer to preserve a fleeting moment of childhood more than 150 years ago.

Offered here is an original antique tintype housed in its original embossed thermoplastic (Union) case with rich red velvet lining. The portrait dates to approximately 1865–1875 and depicts a young Victorian girl wearing a beautifully detailed dress with striped trim, lace stockings, button shoes, and proudly holding what appears to be her favorite doll.

One of the most charming features is the hand-applied tinting to the girl’s cheeks, a technique frequently used by photographers of the era to add warmth and realism to otherwise monochrome portraits. The delicate blush gives the image remarkable personality.

The ornate gilt brass mat remains in place, beautifully framing the portrait and creating an elegant presentation.

* Both halves of the case are present; the hinges have separated, so the front and back are no longer attached.

* Red velvet interior remains present.
