Eric Clapton (b. 30 Mar 1945) is an English rock & blues singer & referred to as 1 of the most influential guitarists of all time, ranking 2nd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He joined the band Yardbirds in '63 then left in '65 to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. After leaving Mayall in '66, he formed the trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker & bassist Jack Bruce, in which he played sustained blues improvisations & "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". After Cream disbanded, he formed blues-rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood & Ric Grech, recording 1 album & performing on 1 tour before embarking on a solo career in '70. Alongside his solo career, he recorded his signature song Layla, with Derek & the Dominos . He continued to release successful solo albums & songs over the next several decades, including the '74 cover of Bob Marley's, I Shot the Sheriff (which helped reggae reach a mass market), the country-infused Slowhand album ('77) & the pop rock album August ('86). After the death of his son in '91, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song Tears in Heaven, which appeared on his Unplugged album. He had another Top-40 hit with the R&B crossover, Change The World ('96). In '98 he released the Grammy winning, My Father's Eyes & has since recorded a # of traditional blues & blues-rock albums. Clapton has won 18 Grammy Awards & the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. He has received 4 Ivor Novello Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the only 3x inductee to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: as a solo artist & as a member of the Yardbirds & of Cream. Eric Clapton has sold over 100 million records, making him 1 of the best-selling musicians of all time.
