Antique Original Japanese Woodblock Print by Yamada Shokei -Gion Weeping Cherry Tree- c.1894
Presented is a beautiful Japanese woodblock print by the renowned Meiji-period artist Yamada Shokei (1866 - ?).
The print is a part of the series "Picture Book of Famous Places by Renowned Masters." The series features famous places around Japan, with different Meiji-era artists contributing designs and other images based on earlier paintings. From panoramic landscapes to views of temples and shrines nestled among the trees, these attractive prints have soft color and interesting linework.
This beautiful print portrays a famous "weeping sakura" in the Gion district of Kyoto. An especially popular cherry tree among the Maruyama park’s specimens is the Gion shidare-zakura, or weeping cherry tree—also known as the yozakura, or “nighttime cherry tree,” of Gion. This large weeping cherry has withered in 1947 after some 200 years in that location. Now, there is another tree cultivated and it's coming to its 90th birthday.
This series of woodcuts was published in 1894 by Tsunesaburo Aoki of Osaka as an album. Please keep in mind that all of the prints from the series come with the centerfold - the album was not bound, but the prints were folded inside a cover envelope.
The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique during the artist's lifetime.
