The Untitled series (1941–1942) is a group of graphic works and oil paintings dominated by hybrid creatures reminiscent of primitive or totemic art.

The artist turns to the tragedies of Aeschylus and Sophocles, attempting to find reflections of modern catastrophes in these timeless myths. Biomorphic surrealism: Human figures are intermingled with parts of animals, birds, and ancient totems. Tiered composition: Paintings are often divided into horizontal zones (friezes), reminiscent of archaeological excavations or ancient bas-reliefs.

In 1941, Mark Rothko was undergoing a radical shift in his artistic style, moving from urban realism to the mythological period and surrealism. During this time, the artist  deeply studied the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Carl Jung. Influenced by World War II, Rothko sought new visual symbols capable of expressing the tragedy of human existence. Instead of the usual colorful canvases (which would only appear in the late 1940s), his 1941 works are filled with archaic images, Greek myths, and dismembered biomorphic figures.
