ANTIQUE STONEWEAR FLAGON - JAMES S NIXON, 18 CANNING PLACE, LIVERPOOL Circa 1881
LADYBIRD BOOKS & COLLECTIBLES SELLER SINCE 2004
James Stewart Nixon was born in about 1825 and was married to Grace Hetherington. By 1881 he was known as a Wine & Spirit Merchant at 18 Canning Place, Liverpool.
I believe that the specific address "18 Canning Place" was part of the area occupied by the building for the Liverpool's Sailors Home, which was a significant landmark in Liverpool for over a century.
The foundation stone was laid by Prince Albert in 1846, and the building officially opened in December 1850. It operated throughout the entire Victorian era until it closed in 1969 and was subsequently demolished in the 1970s to make way for the Liverpool ONE shopping complex. John Lewis Store is built on the original site and footprint of the former Liverpool Sailors' Home on Canning Place.
This Flagon is at least 145 years old with it's handle still in one piece. Due to it's age it does have some chips and gouges, some firing marks made during the manufacturing process. The Flagon was made by Powell Bristol who were major Stoneware Manufacturers.
Stands proud roughly at 31 cm. A very collectible piece of Liverpool's Maritime History association of Canning Place with the Docks.
