About the Author

William Hamilton Maxwell (1792–1850) was an Irish novelist, historian, and former soldier, best remembered for his lively military histories and historical fiction. His firsthand understanding of army life gave his writing authenticity and made his works popular throughout the Victorian period. The Life of Wellington became one of his most enduring biographies and remained in print for many decades.
