Solomon Alexander Hart (1806–1881), historical genre painter. In the 1830s Hart supported himself by supplying drawings for wood-engravings for the publisher Charles Knight and contributed illustrations to various volumes including G. N. Wright's Landscape-Historical Illustrations of Scotland and the Waverley Novels (2 vols., 1836–8). He was duly elected RA on 10 February 1840, the first Jew to be thus honoured. Hart was professor of painting from 1854 to 1863 at the Royal Academy.
