Here, for your bidding pleasure is this antique French glass apothecary jar with a painted tin lid, in EXCELLENT CONDITION! This is the best shape I’ve seen one of these in, with the complete, brightly colored paper label still affixed to the interior of the jar, and a gorgeous red and gold trimmed painted lid, with most of the color still remaining! The label reads CAPILLAIRE, which, in this case, refers to the maidenhair fern, a botanical used in a type of tea and/or syrups to soothe the throat and treat coughs. The jar dates from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. With its geometric shapes, to me, it has sort of an Art Deco vibe in appearance. The jar is free from and chips, cracks or repairs, the lid free from dents. The paint is crazed, giving the lid a pleasing patina. There are many bubble imperfections in the glass, attesting to its early hand blown nature. A tiny dark spot on the rim of the jar opening may look like a chip, but is rather a speck of detritus in the glass. The vessel has a convex bottom with a roughly ground pontil mark on the concave bottom. The jar stands about 9 1/4” with the lid on. Though they’re rare, other examples can sometimes be found on eBay, so one might be able to amass a collection of these for an unusual, old world apothecary display!
