Three intricate white flowers with leaves, each petal shaped from a genuine fish scale and finished with fine silver wire stamens and stem detailing, are mounted on a black background beneath a clear domed lens. The lid is finished with a gilt metal rim with beaded edge, sitting on a white porcelain base.
The original gold foil maker's label is intact on the base, reading "Écailles de Poisson / Fish Scale — M.J. Melo — Açores" — a lovely piece of provenance that many surviving examples have lost.
