THIS NOVEL IS WIDELY CONSIDERED to be one of author Joseph Conrad's most important works and the Modern Library included it in its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th Century, ranking it as 85th. It is a classic drama with the sea as a background - a tale that starts off with a young officer's remorse for joining the crew abandoning a ship and its passengers in distress. This is a defining feature in the subsequent turbulent life of the young man, Jim.

In addition to its popularity among English-language readers, the novel also has a high-standing among French readers. They ranked it 75th among Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century. The story has twice been adapted for film with English actor Peter O'Toole as the most recent portrayer of Jim.
