William Coates was an established wine merchant in the City of London, circa 1800. Around 1825 his premises was 25 High Street Whitechapel. In 1839 his firm was known as Coates and Liston, changing to William Coates and Company in 1840.
The Elephant & Castle Public House was situated at 22-23 High Street, Whitechapel. There is every likelihood that being so close to William Coates they purchased stock from them.
A short walk from 25 Whitechapel High Street was The White Hart Pub at 89 Whitechapel High Street, this pub is famously linked to Jack the Ripper suspect Severin Klosowski also known as George Chapman who worked as a barber in the basement.
The Flagon was made by Doulton & Watts which is the historical foundation of Royal Doulton. John Watts retired in 1853, Doulton and Watts was dissolved in 1855 due to the end of the partnership. The incised makers mark on this Flagon was used from 1827-1858.
This is a Rare piece of Whitechapel's History at least 168 years old, could be up to 182 years old! This Flagon has lived a life with chips and gouges clearly visible. Nice to see the handle still in one piece and in situ. Who knows a young Jack the Ripper or his victims might have come into contact with this Flagon. Stands proud roughly 30-31cm.
