The Gibson ES-335, a quintessential semi-acoustic guitar that continues to captivate many players with its traditional resonant tone and the extended sustain of a solid body, has established itself as a staple model beloved by numerous guitarists since its release in 1958. This particular guitar is a rare 1980 ES-335 Pro, a model manufactured for only three years, from 1979 to 1981.
It features a cherry (CH) finish, serial number "82670022," and weighs 3.89kg. The ES-335TD of that era featured small block inlays and a trapeze tailpiece.
In contrast, this 1979 model boasts a maple body, a three-piece maple neck with a volute, dot inlays, and a stop tailpiece—features that at first glance resemble the early ES-335 models.
Some examples even feature dot position markers on the first fret. (This particular guitar, which arrived this time, starts from the 3rd fret as usual.) The most distinctive feature of this model is the "Dirty Fingers" pickup, an open-type double-black bobbin pickup. Known as one of the highest-output pickups in the lineup at the time, it symbolized the high-power trend of the late 70s and early 80s.
This particular guitar has a "PAT" stamped Gibson original pickup in the neck position and a DiMarzio humbucker in the bridge position. The model number is unknown, but it's a high-output type.
This is why so many unique models, rarely seen today, were born during this era, and this "ES-335 PRO" is a rare model born in a transitional period, due to its short lifespan. It's easy to use as is, with a firm sound, and it could also be used as a standard "ES-335" by adding your preferred pickups.
