1967 Ireland Fantasy Poster Stamp Centenary Of The Fenian Uprising Postage Republic Of Ireland One Cent Fantasy S. Allan Taylor of Boston MNH (Inventory #- 062026_00320)

The Fenian Rising was a rebellion against British rule in Ireland organised by the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB). After the suppression of the Irish People newspaper in September 1865, disaffection among Irish radical nationalists continued to smoulder, and during the later part of 1866, IRB leader James Stephens endeavoured to raise funds in the United States for a fresh rising planned for the following year. However the rising of 1867 proved poorly organised. A brief rising took place in County Kerry in February, followed by an attempt at nationwide insurrection, including an attempt to take Dublin in early March.[1] Due to poor planning and infiltration of the nationalists by the Dublin Castle administration, the rebellion never got off the ground. Most of the leaders in Ireland were arrested, but although some of them were sentenced to death, none were executed. The IRB subsequently carried out a series of attacks in England aimed at freeing Fenian prisoners, including a bomb in London and an attack on a prison van in Manchester, for which three Fenians, subsequently known as the Manchester martyrs, were executed in November 1867. This is a fantasy / propaganda-style Fenian Cinderella based on the 1865–1867 Fenian “Republic Of Ireland” stamp designs, associated with S. Allan Taylor of Boston. The 1967 connection makes sense because Ireland issued official Fenian Rising centenary stamps that year, and this design was also used as a “Fenian Fantasy” centenary-related Cinderella.

What This Poster Stamp Is All About: This Fantasy Poster Stamp Was Created To Commemorate The 1967 Centenary Of The Fenian Uprising In Ireland, Referencing The Earlier 1865–1867 Fenian “Republic Of Ireland” Stamp Designs Associated With Irish Nationalist Propaganda And The Fenian Brotherhood. The Design Is Commonly Attributed To S. Allan Taylor Of Boston And Is Known In Philatelic Circles As A “Fenian Fantasy,” Since It Imitates A Postage Stamp For A Proposed Irish Republic Rather Than Representing A Valid Government-Issued Postage Stamp.

The Design Shows A Black-And-White Imperforate Fantasy Stamp With A Central Irish Harp Surrounded By Shamrocks, The Numeral 1 In Each Corner, And A Bold One Cent Value At The Bottom, Closely Echoing The Symbolic Nationalist Imagery Of The Original Fenian Stamp Issues. The English Wording Republic Of Ireland Is Significant Because Official Irish Postage Later Used Éire, While This Label Reflects Fenian Republican Aspirations And Philatelic Fantasy Rather Than Official Postal Authority. Visible Text Reads: English: Postage Republic Of Ireland One Cent English Translation: Postage Republic Of Ireland One Cent Year Of Issue: 1967 Country Of Origin: United States Or Ireland, Exact Printing Origin Unconfirmed

Thanks So Much For Stopping By! Most Of The Poster Stamps And Cinderellas I Offer Are Truly Old Historic Treasures! Many Are Close To 100 Years Old Or More. Because Of Their Age, You Might Notice A Few Minor Imperfections Here And There. They're Full Of History And Character, But They Most Definitely Aren't Post Office Fresh. That's Especially True For Cinderella And Poster Stamps, So Please Take A Good Look At The Scans Because They're An Important Part Of The Description. Also, Please Note That The Backs Of Poster Stamps Are Typically Considered Much Less Important Than The Fronts, And Descriptions Can Be A Bit Subjective. If The Condition Of The Back Is Important To You, Just Reach Out. I Am Happy To Provide More Details Or Additional Scans.

I Do My Best To Describe Everything Honestly And Accurately, And To The Best Of My Ability, I Guarantee That All Items Are Genuine (Unless Otherwise Noted).
