Antique Stoneware
Flagon – The George Tavern, 13 Tapley St, Popular c1895
CANDIDA BOOKS & COLLECTIBLES SELLER SINCE 2004
This Very interesting Flagon advertises the Wine & Spirit Merchant Henry Steward who ran The George Tavern in 1895. Its’ former address was at 15 Richard Street in 1871 which came under the Tower Hamlets in Bromley. Dates open by 1861 at least until 1910. The George Tavern was demolished and since 1973 Tapley Street no longer exists and the grounds of Langdon Park School now cover the site.
During the bombing raids of World War II, in this area of Poplar the houses were small and terraced and occupied narrow streets. Some of the houses in the street on the right of Tapley Street, St Leonard's Avenue suffered direct hits; and the house immediately opposite No 20 Tapley Street was hit.
There is some wear and tear to this Flagon, some thin crack lines, chips and gouges. It's a lovely and Rare piece of The George Tavern history.
Stands proud at approx. 32cm, this is a heavy Stoneware Flagon, weighing over 4kg.
