A Beautiful Edwardian First Edition Celebrating the World's Greatest Composers

Offered for sale is an exceptionally well-preserved First Edition (1911) of Master Musicians – A Book for Players, Singers & Listeners by J. Cuthbert Hadden, published by the distinguished T. N. Foulis of London & Edinburgh.

Beautifully produced during the golden age of Arts & Crafts bookmaking, this handsome volume retains its original rich crimson suede yapp binding, original All Edges Gilt (AEG), elegant decorative typography and numerous portrait illustrations, making it every bit as impressive as a decorative object as it is an informative musical reference.

Within its pages are engaging biographies and fascinating accounts of many of history's greatest composers, including Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Wagner and many others. The beautifully reproduced portrait plates allow readers to follow the evolution of Western classical music through the lives of its greatest masters.

Produced to a notably higher standard than many contemporary music books, this edition combines quality materials, elegant design and fine craftsmanship, making it increasingly desirable to collectors of antiquarian books, musicians and lovers of beautiful Edwardian bindings.

Condition

Presented in excellent antique condition for a book now over 115 years old.

The original crimson suede yapp binding remains attractive with only light age-related wear and gentle rubbing consistent with careful ownership over more than a century.

The interior is a genuine highlight. The pages remain exceptionally clean, bright, thick and wonderfully crisp, while the original All Edges Gilt (AEG) remain beautifully preserved, reflecting the quality with which this edition was originally produced.

The binding remains secure and structurally sound throughout. As shown in the photographs, the original sewn binding is visible across only two page openings, which is entirely typical of traditionally sewn books of this period. Importantly, all pages remain firmly attached with no loose pages, detached gatherings or structural issues.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
