Description:

Rare and highly atmospheric 19th century Anglo-Indian architectural drawing depicting the celebrated Qutb Shahi tombs near Golconda Fort outside Hyderabad in the Deccan region of India. Executed in graphite with delicate linear draftsmanship, the composition captures the monumental domes and arcaded façades of the royal mausoleum complex associated with the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the Islamic rulers of Golconda and Hyderabad from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The drawing possesses the restrained documentary quality characteristic of British colonial travel sketches produced during the East India Company and early Raj periods. Particularly appealing are the two small Indian figures in the foreground, which provide scale and animate the otherwise monumental architectural scene.

The inscription at center reads:

“Tombs of the Kuttub Shah Dynasty”

A lower inscription further identifies the site as near Golconda Fort and Hyderabad. “Kuttub” is an early colonial transliteration of “Qutb.”

Architectural views of Hyderabad and Golconda were especially prized by British travelers and artists during the 19th century due to the romantic and exoticized perception of Deccani Islamic architecture. Drawings of this type were often executed directly from life in personal sketchbooks by officers, civil servants, and educated travelers documenting the monuments of British India. Surviving examples remain comparatively scarce on the market.
