Antique/Vintage Japanese Maki-e Lacquer Cigarette Case – Chrysanthemum & Book Motif – Taisho / Early Showa Era

Up for auction, from the collection of Paul Taylor, who loved and collected vintage lighters for 30+ years, is a stunning, authentic vintage Japanese cigarette case featuring exquisite low-relief Maki-e style lacquerwork. The front lid depicts an artistic rendering of a traditional Japanese string-bound book adorned with detailed gold and grey chrysanthemum (Kiku) blossoms against a shimmering metallic gold-dust background.
The body of the case features a deep, glossy dark brown/black lacquer finish over a metal frame. The interior opens to a textured gold-tone brass finish with its original dual spring-wire retaining arm intact.

This piece serves as a wonderful addition to any tobacciana, Art Deco, or Asian art collection.

Condition Report:

Exterior: The lacquer retains a beautiful, high-gloss luster. There is a tiny nick/loss to the lacquer on the right side of the front face (see photo) and minor edge wear/pitting consistent with age.

Interior: Very clean with light age-appropriate patina to the brass washing.

Mechanism: The spring hinge operates smoothly, the release button functions perfectly, and the case snaps shut securely. The internal elastic/metal retaining wires retain great tension.

⭐️ This piece is from the personal collection of the late Paul A. Taylor (1952-2024). Paul was a dedicated craftsman and collector known for his appreciation of fine mechanical design and historical manufacturing. This lighter has been curated and kept as part of a significant private collection.
