Whimsical Turtle Sculpture by Frances Pino Torivio
Frances Pino Torivio (1905-2001) made this adorable sculpture of an adult turtle carrying a baby on it's back. She built this of Acoma clay & handpainted the designs using a paint made from the beeweed plant. Many people include her as one of the Acoma Matriarchs, a small group of women who pioneered the resurgence of Acoma pottery in the early 20th century. This is signed Frances Torivio, Acoma, N.M. on the inside of the turtle's shell. It measures approx 3.5" H x 5.5" L x 5" D. This would be a wonderful compliment to any southwest pottery collection!
Excellent condition.
NOTE: Frances Pino Torivio (1905-2001) was one of the matriarchs of Acoma pottery, learning how to work the clay in the 1920's through trial and error, with her sister, Lolita Concho. She went on to teach her daughters, Lily Salvador & Wanda Aragon as well as Edna Chino. Additionally she taught pottery classes at Acoma in the 1970's. She won multiple awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market.
