Choctaw Basket in 3 Colors

RARE This small traditional Choctaw rivercane basket was made in the mid 20th century by an unknown artist from this native  Mississippi tribe. The pattern is similar to a Cherokee "Chief's Daughter" pattern with crosses. These are neighboring tribes in the southeastern US that have influenced each other artistically over the centuries. The colors were created with commercial dyes mixed with the natural cane color to create a patriotic sophisticated 3 color single layer weave in red, natural & dark blue. The rim is wrapped with rivercane, a feature of Choctaw basketry, sometimes seen on Cherokee baskets as well. This measures approx 8.75" H x 5" W x 4.75" D. It is unsigned. Rivercane baskets are becoming even more collectible due to modern day stresses: resources are disappearing, their native homelands are experiencing volatile climate change & undergoing attrition as some places become virtually uninhabitable with rising sea levels.  Simultaneously, these skills are not being passed on to as many new weavers as in the past. This handsome vintage southeastern rivercane basket is a rare example of the craft. It would be at home in any collection as a beautiful example of this traditional southeastern artform!

Excellent Condition! No breakage or loss. The shape is a little off kilter but you could put a little shim under one corner to easily straighten it up for display. Great looking piece!
