This miniature blackware bowl has a painted raincloud design in the tradition of San Ildefonso Pueblo. It is unsigned. This was formed of local red clay, polished to a sheen & handpainted with decorations in clayslip. It was pit fired outside with two firings; the first firing hardens the pot & the second one is used to smoke the surface of the clay infusing it with a rich black color. The polished areas became black and shiny like a mirror, but the unpolished decorative paintings fire out to a contrasting matte finish in a dark grey color. This measures approx 1" H x 1.25" W x 1.25" D. Nice example of the craft that is sure to become a favorite in any collection of miniatures or native American pottery!
