Colorful Jemez Pot by Juanita Fragua

The renowned Jemez potter Juanita Fragua (1935-2023) made this small polychrome pot by hand. She handbuilt it using coils of local red clay, then painted it with mineral & vegetal based paints in oyster white, black, red & turquoise. She signed the base, Juanita C Fragua, Jemez Pue, NM & added her picto of a zigzag arrow. This measures approx 2.75” H x 3.5” W x 3.5” D. She is famous for being one of the few potters in the Jemez revival movement, where a small group of women got together and raised the standard of the pottery being created at Jemez around the 1930's onward.  She also passed on her knowledge of the craft to her many children & in doing so, founded a pottery dynasty! This striking pot from this renowned Jemez matriarch is also indicative of pottery she made in the 60's/70's.

Excellent condition.
