•  Early View of Lemmon St. many signs ~

  • I would think this image would be in the late 1870s

  • Palatka, Florida

  • 1850s Origins: Palatka was officially incorporated as a city in 1853. During this decade, the city grew into a major transportation hub for timber and citrus. Lemon Street—which is technically the historic downtown portion of St. Johns Avenue—was developed during this era to serve as the community's primary commercial artery leading from the St. Johns River docks. This makes the street roughly 170 to 175 years old.Its development dates back to the 1850s. After Palatka was officially incorporated as a city in 1853, it quickly boomed into a major transportation and shipping hub for the region's timber, citrus, and tourism. Lemon Street was laid out during this decade to serve as the community's primary commercial artery, linking the busy St. Johns River docks to the rest of the growing town.

  • ~M.G. MANGOLD~

  • Active Years: Late 1870s through the late 1880s. * Location: Webb’s 1887 Palatka City Directory officially lists him as a photographer operating a home and studio at the corner of Lemon Street and Front Street.

  • What He Was Known For:

Mangold (1826–1894) was an established commercial photographer and landscape artist who captured the Florida tourism boom of the post-Civil War era. He is famous for producing highly collectible stereoview cards (early 3D photographs) capturing the St. Johns River, the Ocklawaha River steamboats, orange groves, and local street scenes around Palatka, Ocala, and Reddick.
