Up for sale is a stunning, authentic late-19th-century American fruit jar. This piece features a vibrant amber color that beautifully catches natural light. The front is boldly embossed with "TRADE MARK LIGHTNING". The base clearly bears the authentic "PUTNAM 326" production mold number, certifying this as a genuine pre-1900 antique rather than a modern reproduction.
Produced between 1882 and 1896. Hand-blown into a two-piece iron mold, showing prominent historical side mold seams. It features a classic, authentic ground lip (frosted rim) typical of "blow-over" molds from this period. Includes the original, correct amber glass lid embossed with three historic patent dates: "PATD JAN 5 75 REISD JUNE 5 77 PATD APR 25 82". Features the original metal wire bail closure system patented by Henry W. Putnam. Excellent antique condition. The amber glass is clean, glossy, and clear with beautiful character, including tiny bubbles and wavy lines locked inside from the original firing. The embossed lettering is strong and crisp. The ground lip has typical, expected in-manufacture roughness but no structural cracks. The lid has some cluster chipping and flake wear along its bottom outer rim. This is very common for wire-bail jars of this age due to decades of closure pressure. It does not affect how the lid sits on the jar and is not highly visible when displayed clamped down.
The wire bail shows a beautiful, dark aged patina consistent with age. It is fully functional and locks securely.
