Agarwood, also known as oud, oodh or agar, is a dark resinous heartwood that forms in the Aquilaria malaccensis tree (a tree native to Southeast Asia) when infected by a type of fungus. Before infection, the heartwood is relatively light and pale in color; however, as the infection progresses, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin in response to the attack, resulting in a very dense, dark and resinous heartwood. This resinous wood is commonly called gaharu, jinko, agarwood, gaharu, or oud (not to be confused with 'Bakhoor') and is valued in many cultures for its distinctive aroma, and is thus used for incense and perfumes.
