This is a lot of 3.13 carat of mixed size rare Hauynite from the
Eifel mountains in the Rhineland-Pfalz area of Germany, near Kelberg,
Mined in 1960, some of this material shows the most prized, breathtaking ROYAL BLUE
color, with hints of Violet.
The stones show the typical color. Many are dark because some matrix is attached to the specimen.

Hauynite may be confused with Lazurite (Lapis Lazuli) or with Lazulite.
These have different characteristics that are easily identified
by knowledgeable gemological laboratories. They are less rare, due
to their availability in nature, and most are not transparent.
FACETING SUGGESTIONS:
Orient each stone before faceting.
This is best done in water OR by transparency over a light source. Look
for the deepest color as you turn the stone.
Avoid thermal shock, use low temp. dopping wax and gradually heat wax and stone to same temp.
Facet
with a fine or extra fine diamond lap at speeds below 100rpm. Wet lap
with steady flow of water based coolant and promptly remove the swarf. Best
if the lap is worn.
Use whole surface of lap moving slowly and avoiding sudden jolts, as cleavage is possible.
Polish on alumina (UltraLap or similar) slow and with very little water coolant.
