. Cleaning and restoration
Past cleaning could have damaged the surface of the shade, leading to a grey or chalky appearance. Gentle cleaning with a. soft cloth and mild glass cleaner is recommended. I did this to one shade and a lot of black came off onto the cloth. It does take a bit of time. It is usually a sign of natural aging or environmental exposure, but it can also be part of the original design. I got this information from a basic online search. The inside of the glass is not chalky, and is smooth as you would expect glass to be.
