About the Author

John Wesley (1703–1791) was an Anglican clergyman, evangelist, and theologian who became the principal founder of the Methodist movement. Educated at Oxford and formerly a Fellow of Lincoln College, Wesley devoted his life to preaching throughout Britain and Ireland, emphasizing personal conversion, holiness of life, and practical Christianity. His influence transformed eighteenth-century Protestantism and led to the emergence of Methodism as a major worldwide Christian denomination. His hymn collections, many containing works by his brother Charles Wesley, played a central role in Methodist worship and remain highly influential today.
