The 509 differs from the Custom 24 and Custom 22 in its neck joint design, allowing for a wider contact area. It's equipped with a PRS 509 Set pickup.

The name "509" comes from its five single-coil pickups and the nine different sound variations it offers. The two mini-switches, one for the front and one for the rear pickup, are independent mode switches, allowing you to select between humbucker and single-coil modes.

This mode switching is more intuitive than that of the PRS 513.
