This is a beautiful antique French Cornely lace & appliqué church pelmet dating from the 19th Century. It would originally have been used to adorn a processional plinth holding a statue of Mary. I have never seen one made in lace before. It could now be incorporated into an interiors project perhaps as a pelmet above a bed or a pair of curtains.
The pelmet is hand worked in cream embroidery and fine muslin appliqué on cream tulle. To the centre are the letters JHS and to either side rose and leaf vignettes run the entire length of the pelmet. There is a scrolled border to the top and sides and appliqué spots cover the background. The workmanship and attention to detail is amazing.
The tulle is backed with a fine cotton in a sublime shade of yellow. There is a sewn cream cotton border to the top of the pelmet. The bottom is scalloped and shaped.
The lacework and tulle are in good antique condition and are intact. The top border of the pelmet has marks and there are a few very minor marks on the lace and background (please see photos). The lace could perhaps be removed from the top border and backing fabric to realise it's full potential.
We have photographed the entire length of the pelmet for close inspection.
The pelmet measures :- 280 cm (9 ft 2.25 inches) wide x 49 cm (19.25 inches) high including the top border which is 10 cm (3.9 inches).
This is a fabulously unique hand worked pelmet to add a gorgeous finishing touch to a room. It is from a carefully selected collection of divine antique French textiles & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe!
N.B. The clips we have used to display the pelmet are not included.
