LeMieux Essence Quilted Riding Boot Black

LeMieux Essence Quilted Riding Boot Black

The LeMieux Essence Quilted Riding Boot is a long leather riding boot built around a single distinctive feature: a seamless quilted panel running up the front of the leg. Quilting normally adds bulk, but the Essence is pattern-cut so the quilting flexes with the foot and the front of the ankle rather than resisting it. The result is a boot that holds its shape against the leg but doesn’t fight the rider during rising trot or lateral work.

The upper is Argentinian Santiago leather, which sits at the softer, more supple end of riding-boot leather — it breaks in more readily than stiffer European hides. High-grade elastic calf gussets deliver the close, supportive fit LeMieux have built across the range, and a YKK rear zip runs from the back of the heel to the top of the calf behind the knee, with a concealed zip keeper and a sturdy puller that doesn’t need two hands. The neoprene-cushioned cover behind the zip head is the detail you only appreciate after a long day — it stops the zip biting into the back of the knee on a drive home or in a long warm-up.

Underfoot, the 5-density contoured ergonomic footbed shared with the rest of the premium LeMieux boot range takes care of support. Double-layer ortho foam, a microfibre sock, an anti-perspiration lining and a firm EVA heel cup combine into a footbed that feels more like a technical walking shoe than a flat leather insole — noticeably so if you’ve come from older-style long boots. The X-Grip rubber outsole carries a linear tread designed specifically to key into the footplate of a modern stirrup, rather than the all-direction tread of a country boot — so the foot sits where you put it instead of creeping forward.

Materials are full-grain Argentinian Santiago leather outside, leather-and-textile lining inside, a vulcanised natural rubber sole, and a footbed built from double-layer 80D foam over a hard EVA cup with a 30D latex and 120-density orthofoam stack. An integrated spur rest is mounted on the engineered zip protector flap, so spurs sit where they belong without chewing the back seam. Fitting and wearing

Put the boots on seated, with zips dropped to the heel, using a shoehorn. Pull the zips up with your foot at 90 degrees, then stand to complete the zip. When taking them off, always lower the zip to the heel before using a boot jack. Don’t step on the bottom of the zip or lever the boot against your other foot.

Care

After wear, dry naturally and use boot trees to hold shape. For a deep clean, brush off dirt, apply a quality leather cleaner, finish with a leather balm, and buff with a soft cloth. Avoid direct heat — radiators and hot cars dry leather out and shorten the life of the upper. LeMieux recommend their luggage collection, available separately, for storage.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Essence different from the Brilliance boot?

The Essence is the quilted-front version of the same platform. It shares the footbed, sole, zip system and elastic calf with the Brilliance, but swaps the smooth leather front for a quilted panel and the diamante topline for a cleaner finish. It’s a touch less formal than the Brilliance and reads more as a schooling-and-competition boot than a pure dress boot.

Does the quilted front affect how the boot breaks in?

The pattern is cut so the quilting flexes at the foot and front of the ankle where you need movement, so break-in feels similar to a standard long boot. Santiago leather on the rest of the upper tends to soften relatively quickly with wear and conditioning.

What’s the footbed like for long days?

The 5-density footbed is contoured rather than flat, with proper arch and heel support. If you’ve worn older leather long boots, you will feel the difference during rising trot and on the ground.

How does the X-Grip sole work with safety stirrups?

The linear tread is designed to interact with the rubber tread of a modern stirrup footplate, keeping the foot in position. As with any riding boot, use stirrups appropriate to your riding and check the sole for wear periodically.

Can I machine wash or hose the boots?

No. They’re full-grain leather — clean with a soft brush and leather-specific cleaner and balm, and leave to dry naturally. Submerging leather boots or exposing them to direct heat will damage the upper.
