This is a superb antique French jewellery  / keepsake box dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860. It would be perfect to take  a few precious letters or keepsakes and would look equally at home in a château chic boudoir or on a gentleman's dressing stand.

The box is covered in it's original dark aubergine coloured leather. The corners of the lid have decorative silvered metal appliqués. To the centre of the lid is a decorative plaque which surely could be engraved. There is an escutcheon to the front of the box but sadly the key has long gone. The box sits on 4 metal stud feet.

The lid lifts up to reveal that the base is lined with a smooth red silk and that the underside of the lid lined with a fabulous deep pile silk velvet.

The box has survived the years in good antique condition and is sturdy. It has a strong piano hinge.

The box measures :- 21 cm (8.25 inches) wide x 15 cm (6 inches) deep  x 8 cm  (3.1 inches) high.

A very old and beautiful box to use and enjoy and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe.
