The Pretender is a 1947 American film noir about a cunning and greedy accountant who learns that his wealthy employer’s young niece is set to inherit a massive fortune. He quickly schemes to win her hand in marriage by posing as a wealthy and sophisticated millionaire. As his elaborate web of lies grows more complicated, he becomes trapped in a dangerous spiral of blackmail, suspicion, and murder.
The film is a tight, tense, and underrated low-budget noir with strong psychological tension and a memorable lead performance.
It stars Albert Dekker as the scheming pretender, Linda Stirling as the heiress, and Charles Drake.
