This is a superb large antique French glass casket dating from the Napoleon III era circa 1860.  It would originally have been used to display keepsakes from a wedding outfit such as the couronne and perhaps flowers from the bouquet. It would certainly add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a boudoir.

The casket sits on 5 elegant ormolu feet. It has thick bevelled claw set glass to the 5 sides and the hinged lid. The frame of the box is made from finely worked gilded metal.

The lid has a scrolled clasp. To the bottom outer corner of each of the front two glass panels is a gorgeous gilded repoussé flower embellishment.

The bottom of the box is covered in sumptuous padded claret silk velvet. It is buttoned with lovely gilded metallic flowers with a central bead. The claret velvet makes the perfect display background for the creams and whites of wedding regalia and the sparkle of jewellery.

The casket is in good sturdy antique condition. The gilding has mellowed with the passage of time and some of the flowers in the buttoning have darkened. The velvet around the edges of the pad is not quite as luxuriant as that in the centre. However these minor characteristics of age do not detract from the beauty of this wonderful box.

The casket measures :-  20.5 cm (8.1 inches) wide x 14.5 cms (5.75 inches) high x 15 cm (5.9 inches) deep not including the clasp.

This beautiful casket is from a carefully selected collection of gorgeous antique French decorative pieces & accessories at 'La Belle Étoffe'.

N.B. The tiara, roses and wine are for display and size comparison only .
