Career and Achievements
Aerospace Writer: In the 1960s and early 1970s, LaMont worked as an aerospace writer for the TODAY newspaper (later Florida Today) and Gannett News Service. He covered key events in the US space program, including the Apollo 1 tragedy, the Apollo 11 moon landing, the dramatic Apollo 13 mission, and the Skylab flights.
Editor and Ombudsman: After the Apollo program ended, he switched to other topics and then held management positions at various Gannett newspapers. He was managing editor and then executive editor at the Fort Myers News-Press. Later, he became editor of the Modesto Bee, where he worked for about 20 years, and then became an ombudsman at The Sacramento Bee before retiring in 2004/2003.
Awards and Recognition: His work was highly valued by his colleagues; he was described as a "good man" and a talented journalist.
Style: He was known for his concise and precise style; his article about the Apollo 11 moon landing consisted of only 15 words.
