“Mary and the Witch's Flower” is the first feature-length animated film from Studio Ponoc, a new animation production company founded by producer Yoshiaki Nishimura after he left Studio Ghibli. It marks the second collaboration between director Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Nishimura, following their work on the Ghibli film “When Marnie Was There.”

 

The role of Mary, the curious and innocent red-haired girl who serves as the protagonist, is played by the talented young actress Hana Sugisaki. Ryunosuke Kamiki, appearing in his second film directed by Yonebayashi following *The Borrower Arrietty*, plays Peter, the kind-hearted boy who shares adventures with Mary, successfully conveying the story’s charm to a young audience of both genders. Furthermore, a stellar cast of actors with a strong presence in the Japanese film industry—including Yuki Amami, Fumiyo Kohinata, and Shinobu Otake—breathes life into the film.

 

The theme song is performed by the major artist “SEKAI NO OWARI.” “We know that magic will fade someday...” Beginning with this line, ‘RAIN’ is a theme song written from a unique perspective that only they could capture, using “rain” as a motif and likening the state of Mary’s heart to the weather. It adds further depth to the film.

 

A “story of encounters and hope” depicted with Director Yonebayashi’s signature expressiveness and direction, following the whimsical grand adventure of Mary—a girl who becomes a witch through the power of the forbidden “Witch’s Flower”—and her eventual journey to face failures and hardships with her own “small courage”!
