Murder on Lenox Avenue is a 1941 American crime drama set in Harlem. The story follows a powerful and ruthless numbers racket boss who rules his territory with an iron fist. When a rival gangster tries to muscle in on his operation, betrayal, jealousy, and murder erupt as the two fight for control of the illegal gambling underworld.
The film is a classic low-budget “race film” (produced with an all-Black cast) that offers a raw, energetic look at Harlem street life, nightlife, and the numbers game during the early 1940s.
It stars Mamie Smith, Willie Bryant, Alex Lovejoy, and Gus Smith.
