An antique Oliver No. 5 “Batwing” downstrike typewriter, produced by the Oliver Typewriter Company of Woodstock, Illinois, dating from the early 20th century, circa 1907–1914.

These are highly distinctive and sought-after machines, known for their iconic “batwing” design, with the typebars striking from either side. The Oliver No. 5 was one of the company’s most successful models, featuring visible writing, robust steel construction, and a number of innovative features for the period.

This example appears complete and is presented in good vintage condition overall. It has only received a light dusting and wipe over, so would benefit from a more thorough clean and careful lubrication. All keys and buttons depress, the roller winds, and it displays very well. Sold as found, untested beyond this basic inspection.

A superb decorative piece as well as a collectable example of early office equipment design.
