HISTORY
Nippon refers to Noritake. Noritake is generally classified as a premium to luxury brand, famous for high-quality craftsmanship. Before 1921, U.S. import laws required imported items to be labeled with their English country of origin. Because "Nippon" is a translation of "Japan" in the native language, many porcelain pieces made by the Morimura Brothers (the company that later became Noritake) were stamped with "Nippon". When U.S. laws changed in 1921 to strictly require English markings, the company shifted its backstamps to "Japan" or "Made in Japan".
