Description

A really lovely antique Romanian folk-art icon, reverse painted onto glass and set within a painted wooden frame. It depicts St Barbara with a eucharistic chalice, symbolising her willingness to drink from the "cup of suffering". Saint Barbara was an early Christian Syrian Greek saint and martyr.

It dates from the late 19thC and would have provided decoration within a rural interior.

These paintings on glass were copied from 19thC German prints, and given a naive interpretation by the peasantry.

It's 45cm tall, and is 32.5cm wide, approx.

It's an absolutely fantastic piece of authentic Romanian folk-art decoration from the 19thC, and antiques of this type are becoming much sought after.

Some small losses to the paint as shown.
