An original 4.5x4" vintage photo (NOT a modern reprint) from a collection of original silver gelatin photos acquired from a collection of US Marine Corps photos.

Photo Overview

U.S. Marines on Tinian distribute mail during the Battle of Tinian in the Mariana Islands, July-August 1944. A group of Marines gathers eagerly around a fellow serviceman who is handing out letters and packages amidst the tropical jungle debris of the recently contested island. The men wear a mix of combat utilities and dungarees, with one Marine in an M1 helmet and another clearly displaying "USMC" stenciled on his herringbone twill jacket. Their faces show the grime and fatigue of combat alongside genuine smiles - mail call was one of the most anticipated events for troops in the Pacific Theater. This is an official USMC combat photograph, captioned and numbered on the front, from a collection of original Marine Corps photos.

Historical Notes

The Battle of Tinian took place from July 24 to August 1, 1944, with the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions executing what many military historians consider the most perfectly planned amphibious assault of the Pacific War. The island was secured in just nine days with relatively light American casualties compared to other Pacific island battles - 328 killed and 1,571 wounded. Tinian's strategic importance far exceeded its small size. Within months of its capture, the Seabees constructed the largest airfield in the Pacific, North Field, from which B-29 Superfortresses launched devastating bombing raids on mainland Japan. Most famously, on August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay took off from Tinian's North Field to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, followed three days later by Bockscar's mission to Nagasaki. The very island where these Marines collected their mail became the launchpad for the weapons that ended the war.

Print analysis

This is a Type 1 original photograph, a silver gelatin print produced contemporaneously with the event depicted in 1944. The photo is printed on period-appropriate matte photographic paper. The handwritten caption "Tinian USMC Photo" and the numbering "#1-11" in white ink on the front are consistent with wartime Marine Corps combat photography cataloging practices. The back is blank aside from minor age-related staining, which is typical of photos that were part of a working military collection. The tonal quality, paper stock, and overall presentation are entirely consistent with a 1940s-era original print from USMC combat photographers operating in the Pacific Theater.
